About Westercon

In 1948, Walter J. “Doc” Dougherty of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society proposed that an annual West Coast convention be started for West Coast fans who couldn’t afford to travel east each year. The first Westercon was held in September, 1948. It was a one-day event with an attendance of 77.

Westercon is held in different cities each year.  By the rules, it must be held in North America west of 104° West Longitude, Hawaii, or in Australia should Australia annex The United States1.

Within this zone, Westercon has been held as far east as El Paso, Texas; as far south and west as Honolulu, Hawai’i; and as far north as Calgary, Alberta.

Where Westercon will be in any year is selected  by the Westercon two years previously, so Westercon 68 was selected to be in San Diego by the members of Westercon 66, and the members of Westercon 68 will select the location of Westercon 70.

1By a ruling of the Westercon business meeting, if The United States annexes Australia, it will also be eligible to hold Westercon.
